Name:The main ingredients to make a polyurethane are di- and triisocyanates and polyols. The polyol stream contains catalysts, surfactants, blowing agents and so on.

The blend of polyols and other additives is commonly referred to as the 'B-side' or as the 'poly'. This mixture might also be called a 'resin' or 'resin blend'. In Europe the meanings for 'A-side' and 'B-side' are reversed. Resin blend additives may include chain extenders, cross linkers, surfactants, flame retardants, blowing agents, pigments, and fillers. Polyurethane can be made in a variety of densities and hardnesses by varying the isocyanate, polyol or additives.

This makes them useful in making polymers but also requires special care in handling and use. It is the length of the polyol chain and the functionality that contribute much to the properties of the final polymer

Spray Foam Roofs: Strong and Durable

Applying a spray polyurethane foam (SPF) roofing system can improve a building's strength. In fact, SPF roofs have effective lifespans that can exceed 30 years.1
Because SPF conforms and adheres to the surface on which it is sprayed, a strong bond forms to protect the roof. The layer of spray foam is seamless and self-flashing, which can eliminate the ability of water to seep through weak spots, such as fasteners and seams. Spray foam can be applied in a sloped manner to allow water to easily drain off the roof.
The bond that SPF forms to the roof can increase a building's resistance to wind uplift. So during periods of high wind, a home or building with a spray foam roof generally experiences less damage than a building without SPF. A prominent spray foam consultant notes that he has found that "when added to the inside of a structure, spray foam 'glues' the whole building together, enhancing overall wind and pressurization resistance.2

SPF offers the following benefits:

Non-Permeable Air Seal
SPF expands to fill all voids and gaps within the framing system, creating a three-in-one Insulation, Air Barrier, and Vapor Retarder system. Traditional insulation systems are subject to unwanted air infiltration, a phenomenon called wind wash. With wind wash, outside air and moisture can be introduced into the wall cavity, greatly diminishing the R-Value. SPF's closed cell structure does not allow air or moisture to penetrate. SPF virtually eliminates the heat loss that is associated with wind washing.

SPF prevents airborne contaminates such as mold, spores, pollens, and dust from penetrating the building envelope.
High R-Value
With an aged R-Value at 6.2 per inch (Closed Cell) and 4.2 per inch (Open Cell) SPF is vastly superior to fiberglass. With the Closed Cell Foam, there are Millions of closed cell bubbles virtually eliminating heat loss through convective air currents within the wall cavity. There is no reduction in R-Value over time as there is with traditional insulation systems.
